King of Shaves are pleased to be assisting (in a small way) Will King’s unsupported charity ride from Vancouver in Canada down to San Diego in the USA in aid of Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Anthony Nolan charities.
No, it is not the King of Shaves ‘Will King’, but it is still a very worthwhile cause! You can follow Will’s progress on his website www.willgoeswandering.com and on his Facebook page, plus, more importantly you can donate via his Just Giving pages, one for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the other for Anthony Nolan.
Please find below in his own words why Will is undertaking this testing and difficult endeavour. And “best of luck” from all the team at King of Shaves!
“In April 2014, I will be starting a 3,000km unsupported solo bicycle ride from Vancouver, Canada down to San Diego, U.S.A., raising awareness and seeking donations for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Anthony Nolan charities, in memory of two friends of mine who before dying were, along with their families, helped greatly by these two groups.
Anthony Nolan operate a database of over 500,000 potential bone marrow and stem cell donors for people with blood cancer and they are in great need of additional donors, particularly men aged 16-30. Registering as a donor is very easy – you can simply send in a saliva sample. My friend Millie Forbes developed Leukemia aged 19 and despite a huge search for a donor and many thousands added to the database, she did not find a perfect genetic match and died as a result.
The Cystic Fibrosis Trust carry out research into finding a cure and ways to treat Cystic Fibrosis, helping to raise life expectancy and quality of life. As a result my friend Milly Douglas-Pennant was able to live into her thirties, get married and have a healthy baby, before dying a few years ago.
As you will see on my website, I am ultimately heading all the way down to Colombia, but not looking for charitable donations for the second leg as i will probably have to get a bus / train through some bits, so don’t want to mislead anyone on that front.”
