See clearly – how window washing has influenced your shave routine*
I have to confess I have a strange fascination watching a professional window cleaner tackle large glass panes. A sense of calm descends as the dirty glass is methodically covered in soapy water. It is oddly gratifying watching the squeegee cut through the foam transforming the glass from grimy to sparkling clean.
What has washing windows got to do with shaving?
If you are a canned shave foam or gel user, that same sense of satisfaction of cutting through the lofty foam with your razor, has probably shaped your male grooming routine, but not always for the better.
The professional window clear needs to create a lather to clean the dirt from perfectly smooth surface of windows. When using shaving gel, we would argue a lot of (hot) air or large bubbles is the last thing you need when dragging a razor across a bumpy landscape such as the stubble on your face (or other body parts!)
Being able to keep track of which areas the razor has covered plays a huge part as to why some men prefer a foamy lather when shaving. Like watching the professional window cleaner slice through the soapy lather with the squeegee, we admit, it is satisfying to see the razor blade cut through foam. We understand long standing shaving habits can be difficult to break.
What does Shave Gel do?
Did you know the bit of you shaving cream that is actually doing all the work is the ultra-thin layer of product between the shaving blade and skin? Save the bubbles for your face wash and just like driving a car make sure you can see where you are going when you shave.
How does Shave Gel work?
All the extra bubbles in a lofty shaving cream lather creates, is simply money down the drain. Why should a frothy habit stop you from getting a better, smoother shave? That’s why we created our range of low foam Shave Gel.
When to use Shave Gel?
Our Shave Gels are the perfect hybrid of ‘seeing clearly’ while enhancing razor glide for a smooth comfortable shave without the need for excessive froth and nonsense. For time-pressed folk or those allergic to bathroom clutter, our low foam range of Shave Gels also double up as a face wash or shampoo for full beard care too.
We think it’s time to ditch the hot air, stop pouring money down the drain and focus on what makes for the best wet shave – that thin layer of product between razor blade and skin. With four different formulas to address all skin conditions, including moisturising Shave Cream, Sensitive Shave Gel, Cooling Shave Gel and Antibacterial Shave Gel, we are sure you will love our Shave Gel range.
Do your skin and wallet a favour, explore our range of low foam Shave Gels to see how much of a difference they can make to your shave.
The January blues; post-festive bags under your eyes, cringing at the thought of how much you’ve had to eat and drink over the past few months… and wishing you could go back and do it all again.
But chin up, no one’s really expecting you to hit the gym 5–6 times a week and come out the other side of January looking like Action Man. Sometimes just a small change can have a big impact on our day-to-day outlook, even something as simple as a new look.
To help inspire you here are a few of our favourite facial hair styles that will leave you feeling fresh faced!
1: THE BALBO
This Hollywood regular has been spotted on such faces as Christian Bale, Brad Pitt and most often, Robert Downey Jr.
Yes, people at work might comment, but whether it’s good or bad really they are all just secretly be wondering if they could ever pull it off like you have.
Our 2-in-1 No Foam Shave Cream allows a comfortable, close shave, without stopping you from seeing where you’re shaving, so you can easily get the perfect shape to your beard.
2: THE FULL BEARD
Maybe you’re one of those guys who likes to experiment with various lengths of stubble, but can never fully commit to the beard?
We say don’t shy away!
3: THE VAN DYKE
Experimental? Sure. But take a look at any photo of Johnny Depp over the last 20 years and tell us it doesn’t look great.
Every. Damn. Time.
4: CLEAN SHAVEN
We know, ‘how original’, right? However you can’t beat a classic. If you’ve ever wanted to feel fresh faced, this is the way forward!
So we have launched our new beard care range, which we hope you will like and use to great effect.
To celebrate the new set of beard products we had a chat round the office as to who were our beard legends. A mixture of ages and interests in the King of Shaves office meant that we came up with veritable selection of legendary beards across film, tv, food and music. We eventually wittled down our selection but it was by no means easy.
Obviously there are loads of beards we have missed but hopefully, you will all know the people from our list whether you be young or old (like some in our office).
The German Bank Robber
In 1988 we were introduced to our first ‘Beard Legend’ of the silver screen. So first up is German freedom fighter, would be terrorist and bank robber, Hans Gruber. Not only did he try to steel $640million in negotiable bearer bank bonds and give us an early introduction into German (Karl……Schieß dem Fenster….look it up), he sported the coolest beard in a long time.
Once upon a time in a galaxy far away………
Come on……we all know that this AG’s Obi Wan is the best one….Yes the young Obi sported a more colourful gingery beard but in terms of ‘legendary’ does not even come close. Anyway, ginger never went with the brown cloak look, always have to be grey.
We all remember his classic line ‘This is the beard range you have been looking for’.
The Mountain Man
Another blast from the past but one of the all time TV greats. This guy not only had a bushy beard to top all bushy beards, he was friends with a Grizzly bear the size of a house. Living in the mountains and off the land, Grizzly Adams was the epitome of manhood. We all found ourselves trying to create fire from two sticks and hoping our facial hair would sprout asap.
The Grey Wizards
Two for you youngsters out there and we could not split them so we decided to include both. Whether you love a bit of HP or LOTR, these 2 wizards had beards that were legendary, literally. Grey and long (free flowing or tied) is clearly the ‘go to’ beard requirement for all, coming out of Wizard school that is. No issues for us…..just more balm required.
Another one for the demographic group who remember the difference between Betamax and VHS. Kenny Rogers certainly was no ‘coward of the county’ when it came to a well kept and groomed beard. It is basically impossible to find a picture of Kenny without his trademark grey, lined in, salt and pepper beard. No other country star has done so much for the hirsute look than Kenny. If its good enough for Dolly, then its good enough for us…official Beard Legend.
Whether you loved B.A Baracus or Clubber Lang, every school boy growing up in the 80’s had their favourite Mr T moment. The effortless acting….’Get some nuts’ is straight from RADA, along with the copious amounts of gold and the wonderfully styled beard, make Mr T a true hero and legend, who we do not pity at all.
Finger Lickin’ Gooood
Never has the Colonel been more popular with his secret blend of herbs and spices coating succulent pieces of chicken. But we love him for the simple fact that the wonderful tash and goatee look (way before David Beckham) he sports, features as part of his brand. Struggling to find any other global brand that has done that.
Had to include these 2 ‘chin’ legends of every boy’s (now middle aged man) Saturday TV experience. Whether it be early morning and the Saturday Morning Swap Shop or evening and Match of the Day, Noel and Jimmy live on in our minds as men who mastered the bearded chin look.
We aint talking no jive, when we say this BeeGee is truly a beard legend. It simply would have been a tragedy not to include him in our list. Accompanied by the most amazing bouffant as well as matching chest hair (it was all the same colour), Barry was giving all the ladies a night fever with his amazing hairy look. Our love is deep for him as he has continued to sport the hirsute look for as long as we can remember.
The Full Monty
A star of tv, stage and screen as well as a heaving drinking gatekeeper make up our last list. Brian and Rubeus have led the way in sporting the fuller bushier beard look to amazing effect, so much so you can only just see their eyes. These larger than life characters will live long in our memories as beard legends.
So that concludes our list of people we see as leaders in the field of the beard. If you think we have left someone out dont hesitate to let us know on @KingofShaves or #KingofShaves and we will add them.
