    • In 2010, will Shaving Oil be the 'Next Big Thing'? King of Shaves launched our Original Shaving Oil back in 1993...!

Nice little article courtesy the Cherokee Chronicle Times in the USA on how shaving oil might be the 'next big thing'!

Guess this is due to recent spate of new razor launches from us with Azor M, Gillette and Wilkinson Sword - where reference is made to shaving with oil as a lubricant.

Check this link to see our evolution of oil into the UK's most loved men's & women's shaving brand.

      Most excellent!

    • Go for Gold Team Shelley Rudman & Kristan Bromley, Bobskeleton Olympic Athletes!

shelleyrudman.jpgBack in 2005, we started a sponsorship programme with King of Shaves with Kristan Bromley. Along with Herbie, other KoS members and Kristan's brother Richard,iIn 2006, I was in Turin for the Winter Olympics, where we saw Kristan narrowly miss a podium place, but watched with our hearts in our mouths as his partner, Shelley, slid to a fantastic Silver medal. Although our sponsorship had been with Kristan, he had called me just before the Olympics started in January, to ask if I'd consider extending King of Shaves' sponsorship to Shelley, which I did.

Following her great position, it was my pleasure to extend a 4 year title sponsorship contract with her, which gave her the necessary funding to keep pace with being an Olympian once again in 2010.

Well, in a few minutes she and Kristan will 'slide again', and I'm up - fuelled by a few cups of coffee to watch.

Will they win? Well, in my mind they already have - they've worked hard to be 'the best they can be', and are genuine Gold Medal contenders (despite having little or no training facilities in the UK). Now with 2 year old baby Ella, and their proud parents there to watch them, we wish them all the best - "slide fast & safe Kristan and Shelley - Go for Gold!"

Best wishes, from everyone at King of Shaves.

    • New King of Shaves Azor M v New Gillette Fusion. Timing is Everything.

KOS_Azor_M_00204_v1.jpgWow. Just a day after we launched our sleek new Azor M, Gillette unveil their new Fusion.

Whereas we've introduced a better v2 cartridge (for the same money), they've introduced a more expensive razor (and cartridge) called ProGlide that uses - tah dah - mineral oil lubrication.

Well, as we innovated with 'shaving with oil' back in 1993, i'm pleased Gillette are finally catching up. But (petroleum derived) mineral oil?

      Urrrgh.

    • King of Shaves Azor M. The Future of Shaving? IMHO? YES!

Thumbnail image for KOS_Azor_M_Pack_Front_v1.jpgHaving launched Azor just over 20 months ago, back in June 2008 (pre Credit Crisis!!!) we've been blown away by its phenomenal success in the UK and abroad. With over 1,500,000 Azor 'Warp' (black/white), Pola' (white/black) & Azor S (blue/white) handles sold since launch, with replenishment cartridge sales averaging 40,000+ per week (some weeks 80,000+) in the UK alone, and with the successful introduction of the (award winning) Azor S (for sensitive skin) late last year, some people might say "enough already".

No Way. At King of Shaves, we embrace change as a constant. We embrace a "healthy degree of paranoia" (just like the founder of Kyocera did). We're always pushing to be same but 'better better BETTER' but in a simple, stylish way - rather than a crass "more expensive, more unnecessary functionality today".

And with the introduction of our new Azor M Alloy System Razor today - not just a new handle, but a new improved Endurium cartridge too - we're starting to innovate at the rate people like Intel & AMD innovate. With more shaving power, yet affordably priced, served in a stylish "iShave" manner. Unlike our competitors, who innovate with "more unnecessary" at "more cost" to the consumer, we're all about a "Cartridge Contract with our Customers".

In the UK, from tomorrow, you'll be able to buy system razor handles from our major competitors at half price. They know Azor M is launching. But, you know what, they cannot (or will not) make their replacement cartridges more affordable. This is where the money lies. £2.50/cartridge, anyone? The 4,500% mark-up in some of these replacement cartridges (no names, no pack-drill) powers Huge Profitability, that allows them to spend more and more on marketing handles at half price. That's why some of the advertising today exhorts you to 'change your blade' like you 'change your tyres.

Where King of Shaves is concerned, we're "Fair Price at FULL Price". And, you know what - we promote too! As I've said in the past, and I restate it today - "I want people to enjoy the King of Shaves without the Ransom". To "Shave Closer, Longer, For Less". For ever.

In my opinion, our Azor M launch today is exciting for three reasons.

KOS_Azor_M_00204_v1.jpgFirstly, we've launched an ergonimically improved, 'stylish yet substantial' handle that has won nigh on universal praise in testing (by our test panel), 'twesting' (by our panel sourced via Twitter) and by hard-nosed bloggers and journalists. The beauty of the Azor M handle is it has just two parts. The 'polyastomer' part & the 'metal' part. And, you know what. Just like Aston Martin's, the metal part is manufactured then HAND FINISHED in the UK! Yes, you read that right - the Azor M you're holding has been hand-polished.

The second reason that our Azor M is important? Well, because we've partnered it with a v2 new slimline cartridge. Our v1 cartridge, over 8m, sold - which was great - could be bettered - it's taken quite a while to ensure it hits our performance targest (LubraStrips last the longest of all cartridges - the Endurium Coating is as good as it ever was) - but this has been a labour of love, and I thank my UK design team ("Andy squared") and the engineering team at our technology partner in making this happen. After all, it's no good having a car that looks like an Aston, if it doesn't pack a punch like an Aston. These new v2 cartridges are going into store now in a new 'curved' pack - so - look out for them.

However, The final reason our Azor M is important is genuine COMPETITION. It allows us to "properly" start taking apart the cosy "monopoly/duopoly" that existed prior to Azor's launch in June 2008. Since the launch of Azor, we reckon we've saved shaving men & womein the UK upwards of £30m* in reduced costs. Our competitors don't like this. And doing it takes us fairly and squarely up against the competitor we know as "Wilkinette". At launch, many 'derided' our Azor as simply 'another disposable razor'. How wrong they were. Not only is it delivering a 10% handle market share, and our cartridge market share is ticking up nicely month by month, but with Azor M (initially available exclusively at Boots - our partner retailer of 16 years), we're now in the System Razor league Big Time.

On this note, when we launched in June 08, "Wilkinette" hardly promoted their products (like, NEVER). Yet, within 2 years (after we launched Azor - coincidence...?), the three of us are running over 3-500 promotions across all major UK retailers each YEAR. Just check out Boots, Sainsbury or Tesco tomorrow (and make the point of buying the Azor, as opposed to the 'Expensive that looks Affordable (yet isn't). That's what happens when "competition" enters the market. It's good for the consumer (more affordably priced products). It's good for the retailers (they benefit from increased marketing spends - both defensively (from Wilkinette) and offensively (King of Shaves), and most importantly - it's great for Consumer (Martin Lewis, Money Saving Expert - please note!!!)

So, now, it's time to scale and grow King of Shaves into the Global Brand I know it can be. We're walking the talk - and you know what - we're deliving. We WILL BE the Apple of the "ShaveWare" world. A brand that's innovative, different - better, yet at a price that is affordable to all. Shortly, I'm to be joined at King of Shaves by a man simply known by me as "iPad". If you've read my book on King of Shaves (which is to be published in paperback in Spring), you might be able to guess who he is.... I'm so looking forward to working with him, along with "Team Andy", my "Smarketing Team" headed up by Tim Wright, and all my hard working guys at KoSCo, we're out to be The Future of Shaving.

To change it for Better, Forever. So...

Here's to King of Shaves Azor M. The coolest, highest performing, most affordable system razor - suitable for men & women alike - on the Planet. (IMHO)

      *my guesstimate.

    • King of Shaves & Mubaloo announce iPhone app 'rApptor' courtesy Real Business Magazine competition

Last year, I entered us into a competition with top business magazine, Real Business and leading UK app developer, Mubaloo to win an app for King of Shaves.

We won! Yay! It was announced today, it's called Project rApptor, and it's one of two major projects I'm immersed in right now.

I'll be tweeting out details as they evolve, and if you'd like to become a beta 'Twester' (ie a tester sourced/found by following me on Twitter) then follow me here and DM me your request (no one from our competition please - there will be a filtration process put in place).

    • "Cut-throat rivalry" - King of Shaves Azor, Gillette Fusion in the Financial Times

Nice little NIB (news in brief) piece in today's FT by Jonathan Guthrie (he interviewed me back in July 2008 about our Azor launch in Canary Wharf) on how we're building market share in the UK, how many handles are sold 'on deal' (many of our competitors' are, that's for sure - trade promotions in our market space hit nigh on 500 last year), and that we'd better watch out.

We're zagging (not lagging) Jonathan - and trust me, I retain a healthy degree of paranoia, as anyone who's read my book will learn! And I think my brother's hedge fund did is doing OK too...plus we've got hot stuff coming...

azor_s_03.jpgI'm delighted that our new King of Shaves Azor S won Shortlist Magazine's 2010 Men's Grooming Award for 'Best New Shaving Product'. The Azor S is exclusively available at Boots in the UK, from Boots.com (has already picked up a couple of great reviews) and from us online. Our Azor, launched in 2008 won this award in 2009 too - and hopefully with what we have planned with 'New, Improved, Better', we'll nail Shortlist's Awards in 2011 too.

    • With 2010 just around the corner, the "Noughties" have been a decade of delight for King of Shaves

How quickly has the last decade passed? I remember being in Val d'Isere on New Year's Eve in December, 1999 - my son Cameron was just a few weeks old, we were all 'worrying' about the Millennium bug, and already deriding the Millennium dome. King of Shaves had just 8 products, and was yet to go on sale in the USA, let alone Japan, South Africa and Brazil. And any thought of launching a King of Shaves razor, with Gillette's Mach3 starting to dominate 'shaving hardware' were still four years away. Even Google was only just starting to get going!

This has been a decade in which so much has happened. 9/11, the advent of 'reality TV', the democratisation and global spread of the broadband internet (remember dial-up anyone?). Michael Jackson died, global warming has become a daily topic of conversation, everyone is looking to have the 'X' factor, in 2004 over 200,000 were killed by the Tsunami, we have a black US president and the economy, which was in strong growth, nearly fell over on a global basis. It's certainly been a decade of change.

Where 2000-2009 were described as the 'noughties', 2010-2019 are being mooted as the 'one-der' years. I'm pretty sure 'the only way is up', with the continuing superfast development of the web, the increasing importance of social networking, for consumers as well as businesses, the advent of 'digital dialogue' rather than 'brand broadcast' and now with twitter along with Google & Bing allowing information/knowledge to be posted and search indexed in real time, things will no doubt happen even faster. So, what big trends might evolve? What industries will flourish, and what will simply cease to exist.

Certainly, where knowledge is confirmed, the rumoured launch of the Apple Tablet (iSlate?) will undoubtedly turn reading about knowledge on its head. Amazon launched the Kindle, which has helped to accelerate the eBook, but undoubtedly by the end of 2019, we'll all have hundreds, maybe thousands, of our favourite books stored on our iSlate, served up by iRead, the competitor to Amazon which will surely be launched by Apple.

We'll also start to witness the advent of the Endustrial (rather than Industrial) revolution; a global infstracture of Environmentally relevant & renewable energy projects, encompassing power generation which eschew the use of oil and coal, and set the scene for how countries will get their power in the future. This is an incredibly exciting area, requring billions of pounds of manufacturing investment, and will almost certainly be 'built locally to satisfy local needs'. I for one am looking forward to seeing a huge array of tidal power devices and wind turbines sited off the coast near Sizewell B, feeding into the National Grid, with them being serviced by a newly rejuvenated Lowestoft, ideally sited to carry out the maintenance of these NewGen products, revitalising the town.

Where shaving hardware is concerned, we could be looking at billion bladed razors - ones that embrace Nanotechnology, which might even self sharpen, as well as the advent of the first ceramic bladed razors, which last forever. Or, maybe, stuff that is even more futuristic... King of Shaves has always pioneered and championed innovation, and this is extremely exciting for us - we have 'new' coming in early 2010, and lots of plans to continue growing and developing our brand - bringing the King of Shaves to men and women on an increasingly global basis, through an increasing variety of distribution channels.

      |So, as I sign off from 2009, I personally have great expectations for next year, and the ensuing decade. It should be a time of growth, consumer collaboration and great innovation - one I'm excited to be involved in, and play my part as a UK manufacturer in too.

But for now, I'm looking forward to a glass of champagne at midnight tonight, and watching the final episode of Doctor Who with David Tennant tomorrow.

      Important: Enjoy!

    • Competition to win my King of Shaves Smart Car Closes Tomorrow.

smart_prizes.jpgTomorrow marks the end of an era for me.

In June 1999, I bought and imported a Smart Car in the UK. It was the smart way to drive, she was a beautiful blue and silver Smartie import from France, and I've driven many thousands of happy kilometres in her.

My son, Cameron, loves her, as do I, we've had much fun in her and we're both sad that she is going, (although we know she'll find a loving owner and good home). Compared to the other cars I've owned in the past 10 years, she's been mechanically superb, and given me (and other drivers) lots of fun - I'm often stopped when refilling her by people who use King of Shaves, who laugh at my "Smart Way to Shave" logo on her.

But tomorrow, the competition we've been running on in conjunction with Spotify ends.

All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning her is to submit a 'track that bent the rules'.

Plus, there are plenty of runner up prizes including my book, AlphaGels and Azors.
